Trophy Goals (including Merits and Definitions)

PPW trophies and merits are available to PPW members. One print merit is awarded to images scoring 76 and above. All PPW trophies are worth one merit. Reference trophy definitions for specific requirements.  Click here for printable pdf

PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN DIVISION

Photographic Open - In this Division the entrant must have captured and created the image and all the elements. If elements of the image are not created by the maker the image should be entered into the Artist Division. See Official Rules for complete Photographic Open details. 

‘Best of’ Trophies Require a minimum score of 79 and are selected by the jurors. Open to all PPW Members.

Portrait Categories

Animal - Portrait of an animal

Child - Portrait of a child usually under the age of 16

Group - Portrait of 2 or more people of any age and/or gender

Woman - Portrait of a woman, HS seniors should not be included

High School Senior - Portrait of a High School Senior

Man - Portrait of a man, HS seniors should not be included

Creative - Any portrait that does not fit in other categories or has a more fine art or creative approach. Suitable for but not limited to conceptual portraits, composites and digital paintings.

Wedding Categories

Bride - Portrait of a bride

Groom - Portrait of a groom

Group - Portrait of 2 or more people from a wedding

Candid - Portrait of a candid wedding moment

Creative- Any wedding portrait that does not fit in other categories or has a more fine art or creative approach. Suitable for but not limited to conceptual images, composites and digital paintings.

Illustrative Categories

Architectural - Image including building exteriors, interiors, architecture and structures, including industrial environments and real estate

Commercial/Illustration - Image of any subject matter that could be used commercially for advertising including product photography.

Landscape - Image of seascapes, cityscapes, landscapes, ariel, and sunsets with or without people or animals as long as the landscape is the main subject.

PhotojournalismImage of any subject matter that could be used for publication, including story telling, action sports, street scenes or documentary. Only dodging, burning, color correction and cropping is allowed.

Still Life - Image of an inanimate subject matter either natural or man made, including florals

Wildlife - Image of undomesticated animals including zoo, birds and wild animals

Creative - Any Illustrative Image that does not fit in other categories or has a more fine art or creative approach. Suitable but not limited to conceptual images, composites and digital paintings

Aggregate Trophies - Requires a minimum score of 76 on each image and are determined by the highest aggregate case score in each category. Only Washington State residents are eligible.

Ken Whitmire Trophy - Portrait Photographer of the Year: Highest aggregate score in the Portrait Category

Bruce Hudson Trophy - Wedding Photographer of the Year: Highest aggregate score in the Wedding Category

Steve Conner Trophy - Illustrative Photographer of the Year: Highest aggregate score in the Illustrative Category

Duncan MacNab Trophy - Best Mixed Case: Highest aggregate score with a mixed case (not all images in the same category)

Berny Workman Trophy - Best New Entrant Case: Highest aggregate score from a first time entrant. This trophy includes the Alma Gray Scholarship in the amount of $250


ARTIST DIVISION

Artist Division - In this Division the entries may be created in various artistic mediums. Photographs may be used in this category in creating an entry, but it is not a requirement. Entries may include freehand drawing or painting in traditional or digital applications. Entries can include stock photography, photographs, or artwork from other artist (s) with written consent to use those sources. Guide images must be included on the face of the entry. See Official Rules for complete Artist details.

Portrait Category Consists of subjects of any gender, age and grouping including animals and wedding portraits. 

Illustrative CategoryConsists of commercial, fine art, abstract, conceptual and non photographic elements.

Restoration CategoryConsists of any subject matter that requires repair and restoration due to surface print damage, color fade, color correction, focus, grain, the extension of an image, missing parts, stains, water damage, etc.

‘Best Overall’ Trophies - Require a minimum score of 79 and are selected by the jurors. Open to all PPW Members.

Best Portrait Entry: Best overall portrait from the Portrait Category

Best Illustrative Entry: Best overall illustrative image from the Illustrative Category

Best Restoration Entry: Best overall image for the Restoration Category

Aggregate Trophies  Requires a minimum score of 76 on each image and are determined by the highest aggregate case score in each category. 

Washington Artist of the Year: Highest aggregate score from the Artist Division


TROPHIES FROM BOTH PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN AND ARTIST DIVISIONS:

Gary Jentoft Trophy - Best of Show: Best single entry from both the Photographic Open and Artist Divisions as determined by the Jurors. Open to all PPW Members. 

People’s Choice Trophy - Voted on by the people from both the Photographic Open and Artist Divisions. Requires a minimum score of 76 and Open to all PPW Members. 

Trophy of Merit - Awarded to the highest scoring case by a PPW member who currently does not hold a Fellow Photography degree.

ASP Elite** - 80 or above, highest scoring image from an ASP (American Society of Photographers) member

PPA CPP** - Highest scoring image from a CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) member

**Awards/trophies are given at their discretion and entrants must meet requirements to be eligible. To be considered for these awards please follow their rules and also check the appropriate box during the entry process in printcompetition.com 



other honors

Judge’s Choice Ribbons Judge’s Choice Ribbons are awarded to the image each juror feels is most deserving of recognition – regardless of how the imaged scored. Any image accepted for exhibition is eligible. Only one Judge’s Choice ribbon is allowed per image. Recipients must be PPW a member.

Honor Court Honor Court is automatically awarded to entries with an 87 or above. Recipients must be PPW a member.
