Education is the key to PPW!

We have several events yearly that offer incredible speakers on various topics to help the professional photographer.

The Spring Educational Conference is around April and provides the association's members an event to come together to enjoy old and new friends. The day before this event our Annual Image Competition takes place. Hired judges are brought in to judge and critique our images with the 12 Elements of Merited Print as a guide.

We hold a Fall Event around October to give a stimulating break from the photographer's busy season of High School seniors and families, for example.

During the year, each PPW District holds meetings four times a year in the their area. To learn about these events besides here on our website, The Washington Photographer Journal comes out four times a year. Within the pages of the journal, you will also learn about the workings of PPW and informational articles about our industry.

Involvement improves your business. Here are a few ways to do this:

Rodeo Photography at The Pendleton Round-Up

This is an all-day+ event with some fun and creative opportunities for attendees. Photographers will be joined by Round-Up photographer Robert McLean who will lend advice and insight into photographing rodeo as well as the Round-Up’s 122 year history

The day will kick off orientation at 8am with the overview for the rules of the facility and to cover the event print competition, plus a tour with the Round-Up Director of Publicity Pat Reay. Be camera ready as the tour will include private access to the press box.

Then the clock will start ticking to capture an award-winning image with the slack-time Breakaway Roping session. Makers have 2 hours to photograph, then select and edit an image. Images are then sent off to be printed for judging later in the day. Be sure to pack your camera gear, plenty of photo cards, extra batteries, and a laptop (or team up with someone that has one) for editing.

After a lunch break – photographers have access to 2 more slack events: Team Roping and Barrel Racing through the afternoon.

Maker’s Images from earlier in the day will be set up in the Historic Let ‘Er Buck room at 4pm and the Round-Up directors will be judging the images from 4-5pm. Awards will be presented after the judging completes. Participants will be able to take their images home.

Attendees will also receive a Pendleton Round-Up Swag Bag for participating in the day.

A bonus session for those coming in the day before – The iconic flag barrier will be holding a practice session on Sunday, Sept 11 and registered event participants will have access to photograph this practice on the rodeo grounds.

This is a PPA, PPW and OPPA merited event.

Hotels are filling up for the main rodeo events that week - but consider looking for AirBNBs, Hermiston OR or even in the Tri Cities WA as they are all in driving distance.

    - Non-Member
Space is capped at 25 photographers, so register early

Power Color: Creative Portrait Lighting with Gels

Light and Color are two of the most effective tools that a photographer has to add subtle creative touches or to create dramatic impactful statements in a photograph. Effective use of color can be the difference from an ok shot to an incredible one.

Using 3D light planning software (set.a.light 3D) Joe will show you actual shot breakdowns of how he uses color and colored gels as an integral part of creating Fashion and Beauty portraits.

He will cover color theory and emotion and give you some great resources to help you become confident with color selection. He will look at options for creating color with both strobes and constant light sources and will take you through his process from start to finish.

    • What you will learn:
    • Why does color matter?
    • How to plan the right colors.
    • How to read a color wheel.
    • Types of gels.
    • How to make DIY gels.
    • The easiest way to start using gel.
    • … and much more!
