THE JURORS |
The PPW State Image Competition is a professional-level judging environment where photographers submit their work to be evaluated, strengthened, and celebrated. Our panels are led by PPW Jurors, who are Professional Photographers of America Master Photographers trained to assess images at a high standard. These jurors not only recognize what qualifies as a merit image, they can clearly justify their scores, listen thoughtfully to fellow jurors, and demonstrate flexibility during discussion. They communicate their thoughts concisely, offer persuasive and respectful rebuttals when needed, and maintain a positive, supportive tone. Their role is not just to score images, but to provide meaningful feedback that helps photographers grow, which is why we encourage qualified members to complete the requirements and get involved in this vital part of our organization.

Chris Wooley is a photographer, educator, and industry leader based in Washington State.
Known as The Photo Professor, Chris helps photographers make better decisions creatively, technically, and professionally when the work truly matters. With decades of experience, he is recognized for bringing clarity to complex topics by focusing on judgment, intent, and understanding rather than trends or formulas. A past President of the Professional Photographers of Washington and current President-Elect of the American Society of Photographers, Chris is an accomplished competition judge and recipient of numerous industry honors, including Fuji Masterpieces, ASP Elite recognition, and a PPA National Award.

JEFF JOHNSON - Master Photographer | Artist | Educator | Chief Instigator Admittedly these are self-inflicted titles. However, I have earned the Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America and this can only be achieved with high quality imagery and an intense and long-term participation in the industry. In my 45 years as a professional I have always been one to share exciting ideas and techniques. It only then makes sense that I offer consultations, programs and workshops which create a vehicle where I can share the knowledge I have accumulated over these rewarding years and hopefully educate photographers everywhere.
Chief Instigator . . . now this is an interesting tag. As you may imagine I have had my fair share of teasing and abuse over this one. A lot of folks think this means “troublemaker”, which, if you know me, isn’t really that far-off base. If you look it up it means “one who urges or provokes action or course. To instigate the people to photograph.” Well, I altered the last part but this is exactly what I am trying to do, instigate!

Carly Sullens, M. Photog., M. Artist, CPP, ATR, is an award-winning photographic artist, educator, and PPA Approved Juror. With a background in art therapy, painting, art history, and psychology, she brings a thoughtful perspective to image evaluation, balancing technical execution with visual impact, storytelling, and intention.
Carly’s own work often explores the space between photography and artistic processes, incorporating experimental capture, ICM, compositing, texture, and mixed-media influences. Her work has earned numerous state and national honors, including Imaging Excellence, Best of Show, Photographer of the Year, Judges’ Choice awards, and multiple first-place finishes across photographic and artist categories.
As a judge and educator, Carly values clear communication, thoughtful critique, and constructive feedback that helps photographers strengthen both their images and their decision-making.

Kimberly Olker bridges the gap between technical precision and artistic vision. Originally trained as a software engineer, Kimberly transitioned to professional photography in 2005, blending her analytical roots with a lifelong passion for the arts.
Today, she is one of the industry's most distinguished creators, holding the titles of Master Photographer, Master Wedding Photographer, Photographic Craftsman, and Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) through PPA. An approved PPA Juror, Kimberly serves on international judging panels, bringing a trained, objective eye to evaluating technical mastery and creative execution. Her own commitment to excellence was cemented when she was awarded the prestigious Diamond Photographer award for Landscape at the International Photographic Competition.
Beyond competition and judging, Kimberly is a dedicated educator and advocate for the photographic community. She has mentored photographers through national and local organizations and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Photography. Kimberly is a frequent speaker known for her ability to help others master the delicate balance of technical skill and creative expression.

Dwight obtained all five photographic Degrees, and has been professionally judging for PPA's Photographic Merit Image Reviews since 1996.
Dwight is approved for all judging categories: Photographic Open, Weddings, Master Artist/ Digital Competitions and Event Albums.

Kristi Elias is an award-winning fine art portrait photographer with over 27 years of experience in the photographic industry. A Master of Photography, Master Artist, Photographic Craftsman, and ASP Fellow, Kristi has earned numerous national and international honors throughout her career. She has served as a print competition judge for PPA affiliates, WPPI’s International Print Competition, and Master Photographers International. Kristi brings a strong understanding of photographic technique, storytelling, artistry, and impact to the judging panel.
