2025 PPW IMAGE COMPETITION RULES

 PPW PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN DIVISION 

  1. All entries must be registered at www.printcompetition.com.
  2. Entrants may submit only digital files for judging.
  3. No changes to your entry are permitted once the entry deadline has passed. 
  4. No refunds will be issued after the entry fee is paid.
  5. Entrants do not need to be PPW members to compete in the Photographic Open Competition. Only PPW members can earn merits and trophies.

Eligibility

  1. Entrant must have captured and created the original exposure or exposures using photographic processes.
  2. All photographic elements must have been created by the maker. No stock or AI images will be allowed.
  3. All processing, manipulation and rendering, were done by the entrant or under their direct supervision.
  4. The entrant has obtained and has access to all necessary releases (model or property) and agrees to hold PPW harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of PPW's display, publication and promotion or other use of each image submitted to PPW.
  5. The entrant's name shall not appear anywhere in or on the entry.
  6. No entry will be eligible if it has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment. All images submitted must be self-directed. Images created in an educational environment under direct supervision from an instructor are ineligible.
  7. Any entry that has been created from an existing photograph, portrait, graphic or any other artwork produced by another person is a violation of the competition rules.
  8. Once an image has been awarded an exhibition merit (PPW score of 76 or higher) it may not be entered again in any other category or PPW competition, at any time, by any entrant, including any image from a merited album.  
  9. Any image that has been entered in a PPA Image Competition is allowed to be entered in the PPW Image Competition.
  10. Any image that has been entered in a PPA Image is eligible.
  11. Entries of the same subject in multiple images will be allowed, as long as the images are entirely different concepts. 
  12. A maximum of four (4) entries may be submitted per entrant. 

Illustrative Categories

  • Architectural - Image including building exteriors, interiors, architecture and structures, including industrial environments and real estate.
  • Commercial/Illustration - Illustrative or graphic depiction of any concept or subject for advertising and product photography. Composite and non-composite images and highly manipulated images (Photoshop or similar) are allowed in this category.
  • Landscape - This category is for photography that is devoted to displaying natural elements such as landscapes, cityscapes, broad views of plants, and trees. Aerial Photography and astrophotography are included in this category.
  • Photojournalism - Images that illustrate an actual public or non-public event, life, an area of human interest, telling news that have meaning in the context or record of events, high impact, and/or lasting emotional response. ONLY basic color and brightness adjustments, cropping, dodging, and burning in are allowed. Only single capture images will be accepted. Composite and multiple-exposure or in-camera file stacked images will not be accepted.
  • Still Life - Image of an inanimate subject matter either natural or man made, including florals close-ups of natural scenes and textures and macro. 
  • Wildlife - Images must depict actual wildlife in a natural habitat. Cropping, rotating, selective dodge and burn, reducing noise, sharpening, adjusting color/black-and-white, applying grain, and minor retouching is allowed. Photo stitching, focus stacking, and multi-exposure are allowed as long as it is shot at the same time and in the same place as a consecutive sequence, seconds or minutes apart.
  • Creative - Any Illustrative Image that does not fit in other categories or has a fine art or creative approach. Suitable but not limited to conceptual images, composites and digital paintings.


Portrait Categories

  • Portrait of an Animal - Studio or outdoor portrait of a domestic animal.
  • Child - Portrait of a child usually under the age of 16
  • High School Senior - Portrait of a High School Senior 17-19 years of age.
  • Portrait groups / Families (2 or more people) - Portrait of a family or group of at least 2 or more people. 
  • Woman - Portrait of a woman, HS seniors should not be included.
  • Man - Portrait of a man, HS seniors should not be included.
  • Creative - Any portrait that does not fit in othercategories or has a fine art or creative approach. Suitable for but not limited to conceptual portraits, composites and digital paintings.


Wedding Categories

Images in the Day of Wedding category must be done in connection with an actual wedding event (not a stylized session). Images must reflect the personality of the subject(s) and/ or illustrate the story of the event. They must include some visual reference(s) that defines the wedding event (traditional clothing, church flowers, etc.).

  • Bride - Portrait of a bride
  • Groom - Portrait of a groom
  • Group - Portrait of 2 or more people from a wedding
  • Candid - Portrait of a candid wedding moment
  • Creative- Any wedding portrait that does not fit in other categories or has a fine art or creative approach. Suitable for but not limited to conceptual images, composites and digital paintings.

Third-party images and software

No third-party imagery or stock photography is allowed.

Non-photographic filters and actions produced by third parties that enhance characteristics of an image but do not add elements to an image are permitted except for in the Photojournalism category.

Disqualification

Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification of the entry. If an entry, in the good-faith opinion of PPW, violates copyright, trademark or any other applicable law, that entry shall be disqualified. The decision of the PPW Photographic Competition Committee is final.

Submission 

  1. Files must be sized so the longest dimension is 4000 pixels. Each file must contain an embedded color profile of either sRGB or Adobe RGB1998 and be saved at a JPEG quality setting of 12. 
  2. Files are to be named, Image Name.jpg with no underscores or special characters.
  3. The base membership at www.printcompetition.com is all that is needed for entry to PPW competitions.

Viewing Conditions for Image Review

Digital Files: Monitor Settings, D65, 120 cd/m2, 2.20 gamma

 PPW ARTIST DIVISION

  5. Entrants do not need to be PPW members to compete and can enter the Artist Competition. Only PPW members can earn merits and trophies.

  1. Entries may be reproduced from existing photographs, portraits, graphics or any other artwork so long as the entrant is prepared to provide appropriate written documentation indicating permission for usage. 
  2. All processing, manipulation, artwork or rendering must be done by the entrant. 
  3. The entrant has agreed to hold PPW harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of PPW's display, publication and promotion or other use of each image submitted to PPW.
  4. The entrant's name shall not appear anywhere in or on the face of the entry.

Categories 

You must designate one of the below categories for each entry: 

  • Portrait: Consists of subjects of any gender, age and grouping including animals and wedding portraits. 
  • Illustrative: Consists of commercial, fine art, abstract, conceptual and non photographic elements.
  • Restoration: Consists of any subject matter that requires repair and restoration due to surface print damage, color fade, color correction, focus, grain, the extension of an image, missing parts, stains, water damage, etc.

Disqualification

Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification of the entry. If an entry, in the good-faith opinion of PPW, violates copyright, trademark or any other applicable law, that entry shall be disqualified. The decision of the PPW Photographic Competition Committee is final.
