Understanding Print Competition
One way to grow as a photographer is to have your work judged against a common standard of excellence by a jury of trained, experienced, and impartial judges. Print Competition, at either the state (Professional Photographers of Washington) or national (Professional Photographers of America) level can be a scary thing, especially the first time around. It helps to talk to someone who’s been there before and understands the process inside and out.
Marie Martineau-Sandberg, Photographic Craftsman, will talk about the Fundamentals of Print Competiton, including the 12 elements of design, placement, presentation, the importance of titles, and how first impression can affect a print’s final score.
Marie has operated Timeless Memories Photography in Olympia, Washington since 1993. She’s held, and continues to hold, several positions within both PPW and PPA. She has many years experience with print competition, both as an entrant and as a judge. She’s sharp, opinionated, and insightful.
Bring 4-6 images you’re considering entering in competition next year for feedback on your work. Put them on a thumb drive, JPEGs sized 2000 pixels on the long side.
As has become our practice, some of us will adjourn to a local watering hole to continue the conversation over beer or wine after the meeting.
