NEWS RELEASE

PPA Communications Winners
PPW Website gets Honorable Mention- Catagory VII

June, 2009

Congratulations to the 2009 Affiliate Communications Competition winners and all participants!

Yes, the results are FINALLY in (is that a big sigh of relief I hear?). This year seemed to be tough on the judges—as you’ll see in the several ties we have! There’s a tie for first place in Category V (the pdf category), and the other winners in that category were only about half a point away from each other. The same goes for Category VII (the websites) where there were 4 Honorable Mention ties! The amazing breadth of resources on the winning sites and publications are wonderful (and the judges liked them, too). The bar has definitely been lifted.

Scoring & Critiques: The judges scored the publications and websites for editorial content, service to members, and overall appearance. The editorial content and service factors have the most weight when totaling the overall score.

Merits: The competition awards every eligible entrant one PPA merit per entry. Those who place or earn an honorable mention receive an additional merit for each winning entry…and bragging rights!

PPA Defines New Districts
Sam Gardner - PPA Councilor

May, 2009

PPA currently has 13 regions and as of 2011 they will have the five "districts". Our Western States district will consist of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Nevada and the three new ones joining us for the first time - Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho.

The P.E.C. calculated these new districts to make them approximately the same size as far as the number of print cases that were entered in 2007. They felt this was the fairest way to re-distribute the opportunity for each district to afford the hosting of these P.E.C. events. Each new district should have approximately 200 cases of entries coming in. We had just 124 cases this year at Western States judging when we hosted it at Grand Mound Washington.

Overall the growth in case count could be a really good thing for PPW and the conference budget. One factor which can make a huge difference is to utilize jurors as speakers when possible as PPW gets the advantage of two workers for one airfare/per diem/Etc.

This year at our judging, it seemed that a lot of people were disappointed with the scores. The way the breakdown came out was very interesting. The Print Exhibition Committee,(PEC), is the committee from PPA who oversees and owns the regional judgings in north America. They suggest that a "normal" regional judging will have approximately 20% to 30% of all images entered score at 80 or higher and thus earn a national merit-seal of approval.

This year- here at Western States, if you look at the results of just the PPA members and remove the PPW members, there were about 24% of the images making the 80 or higher mark. If you use just the new and first time entries from within PPW, then the average was even better at about 27%. The only group to score rather poorly were the longer-termed members of PPW who's average of about %7 at 80 or higher actually lowered the overall average of the entire region. While it was unfortunate to see some PPW members prints score this way, it was very exciting to see the new members score so well, and take home so many of the awards and trophies.
